What does City Funeral Service provide for $895.00?
Transfer from the place of death in New York City (The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan or Staten Island), and Westchester County (hospital, nursing home or medical examiner facility**) to our funeral home located in Yonkers, New York;
Basic services of the funeral director and staff including: 24-hour availability, providing all necessary authorization forms and a statement of goods and services selected to the next-of-kin or party directly responsible for the deceased's affairs, securing a death certificate certified by the attending physician, obtaining a cremation approval from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), filing the death certificate with the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) or other municipal registrar and obtaining certified copies of the death certificate on your behalf, and providing temperature-controlled (refrigeration) shelter for the remains until the transfer to the crematory;
A Cardboard alternative container (a casket is NOT REQUIRED for direct cremation but an alternative container IS REQUIRED by the Crematory and is cremated along with the body). However, if you wish to purchase a cremation casket, view our cremation casket gallery here.
Transportation of the remains, in the alternative container or cremation casket, to the Crematory.
**A death that takes place in a private residence where additional staff may be needed or at a Nursing Home or Hospice Facility where no facilities to shelter the body exist, requiring a time-critical response may incur an additional charge of $150.00. Deaths outside of our immediate area may also incur a slight additional transportation fee that is based on mileage. We will provide an exact price quotation prior to providing any service to you and your family. Simply call (877) 274-5152 at any time for additional information.
What is NOT included?
"Cash Advance" items are not included in our $895.00 cremation service fee. Cash advances are third party charges. We do not profit on their sale, and their amount does not vary among New York funeral homes. These items will appear on the right side of the Statement of Goods and Services Selected our office will provide you during the course of finalizing cremation services. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and New York State Department of Health forbid us from “bundling” these charges with our Direct Cremation Service Charge, and must be itemized separately. Typical cash advance items that are associated with a direct cremation service in New York include:
Crematory fee: (for the actual cremation - $474.00, The cremation is performed at The Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx – if you prefer, the cremation can take place at one of several New York Area crematories, cost will vary among each crematory). Note: In New York State, a licensed Funeral Director must perform the basic services listed in our Direct Cremation Service Charge above. A Crematory CANNOT act as a licensed Funeral Director or perform the tasks of one as is the case in other States. Funeral Homes are forbidden by NY State Laws to operate cremation retorts on their premises, therefore we must engage the services of a Crematory, usually located on the grounds of a Cemetery.
Disposition (cremation) permit: ($40.00 for deaths in the Five Boroughs In New York City, $20.00 elsewhere in New York State)
NYC EDRS (Electronic Death Registration System) usage fee: ($6.75) if a death takes place in the 5 boroughs
Certified copies of the certificate of death: ($15.00 per copy in New York City, $10.00 elsewhere throughout New York state); and a UPS delivery fee of ($17.00) for forwarding the death certificates to you (Deaths in NYC 5 Boroughs Only)
For your information, the "average" direct cremation cost ranges between $1429.00 to $1,487.75. This includes our $895.00 professional service fee, the CASH ADVANCES described above, and three (3) copies of the certificate of death. A cremation urn is an optional item and is not included in our direct cremation price. The crematory will supply a simple canister containing the ashes if no urn is selected. If you wish to select a cremation service other than a direct cremation, please click here.
Six steps in the cremation arrangement process:
1. You or a person familiar with the wishes of the deceased notify our office of the death.
2. Our staff will take some basic information, and you will provide us the information we'll need form, and return this to us by fax, or e-mail.
3. We will provide you all necessary authorization documents and price disclosures, either via e-mail or an in person arrangement conference at our Funeral Home, or a location convenient to you.
4. After the forms we provide are returned to our office properly completed, the deceased will be placed into our care and sheltered at our facility. If someone passes at home or in a facility where there is no space to shelter the body for an extended period of time, we may need to respond to the location of the death immediately, prior to providing any authorization documents. Permission to place the deceased into our care may be given to us by the person closest to the deceased or their representative via telephone or e-mail.
5. All authorizations such as the certificate of death will be filed with the appropriate municipal authority, and a cremation approval obtained.
6. The cremation will be scheduled, and the deceased transferred to the crematory. The ashes will be returned to you or a party you designate.
Simple, right? The total turn-around time for a New York Cremation Service is 5-7 days, however, if your circumstances require cremains be made available to you sooner, City Funeral Service will work diligently to accommodate your wishes.
